Hiking Piton des Neiges from Cilaos
The essentials at a glance
- Trailhead: Le Bloc, about a 10-minute drive from central Cilaos (2 km of track, then the trailhead car park).
- Elevation gain: around 1,700 m from Le Bloc to the summit (3,070 m).
- Timing: 3–4 h up to the Caverne Dufour mountain hut, then 1 h 30–2 h to the summit.
- Difficulty: demanding. Waymarked but very steep, rocky near the top.
- Best season: all year, avoiding the cyclone season (January–March) and forecast rainy days.
Two ways to climb it
The classic option is a two-day hike: climb to the Caverne Dufour hut in the afternoon, sleep there, wake around 3:30 am and reach the summit for sunrise. It is by far the most memorable version, and the safest for most walkers.
The single-day option suits trained hikers only: start before dawn, 8–10 hours round trip, with a knee-punishing descent. In both cases, book the hut well ahead, especially during school holidays.
What to bring (and what to leave behind)
- Head torch with fresh batteries — essential for the pre-dawn start.
- Warm layer and windproof: it can be 0 °C at the summit while Cilaos sits at 25 °C.
- At least 2 litres of water per person; there is no drinking water on the trail.
- High-cut hiking boots: the summit section is loose volcanic scree.
- Trekking poles, genuinely useful on the way down.
Everything else — suitcase, laptop, beach gear, spare clothes — does not belong on your back. The simplest approach is to leave what stays behind in luggage storage in Cilaos and set off with the mountain pack only.
Where to leave your car during the climb
The Le Bloc car park is small, unsupervised and fills up fast in high season or at weekends. Leaving a rental car overnight at a trailhead, with belongings visible inside, is never a good idea.
The alternative is to leave the car in supervised parking in central Cilaos and arrange a drop-off at the trailhead. You collect the car on your return, without stress and without walking back down to the village.
After the hike
Plan a slow end of day: the Cilaos thermal baths, a local table, a glass of Cilaos wine. If you have already checked out, luggage storage lets you enjoy Cilaos until the evening before tackling the 400-bend road back down.
